Worked example

A $250 purchase in Ontario

Ontario charges a single HST: 250.00 × 13% = $32.50, for a total of $282.50.

The same $250 in British Columbia splits into two lines: GST 250.00 × 5% = $12.50 and PST 250.00 × 7% = $17.50, total $280.00. In Quebec: GST $12.50 plus QST 250.00 × 9.975% = $24.94, total $287.44.

How this calculator works

Each tax is computed on the pre-tax amount: tax = amount × rate, and total = amount + all taxes. In HST provinces the federal and provincial parts are combined into one line. In Quebec, QST has been calculated on the price excluding GST since 2013, so both taxes apply to the same base here.

Rates shown are the general rates for taxable retail purchases. Many categories are treated differently: basic groceries and prescription drugs are zero-rated for GST and HST, books get point-of-sale rebates in some provinces, and children's items, prepared food and restaurant meals follow their own rules in several provinces.

Common questions

Why does the same item cost more in one province than another?

Because the provincial part differs: 0 percent in Alberta and the territories (GST only), up to 10 percent provincial share inside the 15 percent HST in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island. Nova Scotia moved to 14 percent HST in April 2025.

Is QST charged on top of GST?

No. Since January 1, 2013, QST is calculated on the sale price excluding GST, so this calculator applies both Quebec taxes to the same pre-tax amount.

Are these the rates a business charges?

These are the general consumer rates. Businesses also deal with place-of-supply rules, exemptions for status cards and out-of-province deliveries, and industry-specific rates. Treat this page as a quick consumer reference and confirm business cases with the CRA or Revenu Quebec.
