Worked example
A $200 jacket is 25 percent off, with an extra 10 percent off at the register, plus 13 percent HST:
- After 25% off: $200 × 0.75 = $150.00
- After the extra 10% off: $150 × 0.90 = $135.00
- Tax: $135 × 13% = $17.55
- Final price: $135 + $17.55 = $152.55, and you saved $65.00 before tax
- Notice the two discounts combine to 32.5% off, not 35%. Stacked discounts multiply rather than add.
How this calculator works
Each discount is applied to the already reduced price, which is how stores apply them. Tax is calculated on the final discounted price, matching how sales tax is charged at Canadian checkouts in the usual retail case.

Common questions
Why is 25% off plus an extra 10% off not 35% off?
Because the second discount is taken on the smaller, already discounted price. Ten percent of $150 is $15, not $20. Together, 25% and 10% off equal 1 − (0.75 × 0.90) = 32.5% off the original. The bigger the stacked percents, the bigger the gap versus simply adding them.
Is tax charged on the price before or after the discount?
In the usual retail case in Canada, tax is charged on the amount you actually pay, so after store discounts. Manufacturer coupons and mail-in rebates can be treated differently in some provinces. This calculator follows the common case; if your receipt shows tax on the pre-discount price, set the tax rate so the result matches your store's method.
