Bill Split Calculator
Split a bill evenly, with tax and tip worked in, so nobody has to do mental math at the table.
Your results
Worked example
A $120 dinner bill split 4 ways, with 13 percent tax and an 18 percent tip:
- Tax: $120 × 13% = $15.60
- Tip (on the pre-tax $120): $120 × 18% = $21.60
- Grand total: $120 + $15.60 + $21.60 = $157.20
- Each person: $157.20 ÷ 4 = $39.30
How this calculator works
The tip is figured on the pre-tax bill amount. Tipping on the after-tax total is also common; it raises the tip slightly (on this example, to $24.41). Either is acceptable, and this page states its method openly so the table can agree on it before the card comes out.
Common questions
Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?
Traditionally, tip percentages are based on the pre-tax amount, because you are tipping on the food and service, not on the government's share. Card terminals often suggest tips on the after-tax total, which quietly inflates them. This calculator uses the pre-tax method.
What if we did not all order the same amount?
This tool splits evenly, which works when orders are similar. For uneven orders, a fair method is for each person to pay for their own items, then split the tax and tip in the same proportions. Most payment apps can handle the transfers once the amounts are agreed.
