Oven Temperature Converter
Convert between Fahrenheit, Celsius and Gas Mark, with the fan-assisted setting shown alongside.
Worked example
350 F converts to (350 - 32) x 5/9 = 176.7 C, which is Gas Mark 4. For a fan-assisted oven, reduce by 20 C as standard guidance, giving about 157 C. Printed charts round these to 180 C conventional and 160 C fan.
Formula and reference table
Celsius = (Fahrenheit - 32) x 5/9. Fan-assisted = conventional Celsius minus 20 C (guidance; some makers suggest minus 10 to 15 C, so check your manual). Gas Mark follows the standard table:
| Gas Mark | Celsius | Fahrenheit |
|---|---|---|
| 1/4 | 110 | 225 |
| 1/2 | 130 | 250 |
| 1 | 140 | 275 |
| 2 | 150 | 300 |
| 3 | 165 | 325 |
| 4 | 180 | 350 |
| 5 | 190 | 375 |
| 6 | 200 | 400 |
| 7 | 220 | 425 |
| 8 | 230 | 450 |
| 9 | 240 | 475 |
| 10 | 260 | 500 |
FAQs
Why does my recipe book show 180 C for 350 F? Charts round to the nearest dial setting. The exact conversion is 176.7 C; either setting works for most baking, with 180 C giving slightly faster browning.
Do I always reduce for a fan oven? For most cakes, roasts and casseroles, yes, by about 20 C. Delicate items and manufacturer recipes written for fan ovens are the exception; your oven manual wins.
