Grams depend on the ingredient, because a cup of flour weighs far less than a cup of sugar. Densities below are standard published references.

Worked example

Two cups of all-purpose flour: volume is 2 x 236.588 = 473 ml, which is 32 tbsp or 96 tsp, and at the standard reference of 120 g per cup it weighs 240 g.

Formula

One cup = 236.588 ml = 16 tbsp = 48 tsp. One tbsp = 14.787 ml, one tsp = 4.929 ml. Grams = cups x the ingredient density in grams per cup. Standard density references used here: flour 120, granulated sugar 200, butter 227, water 236 g per cup.

FAQs

Why do flour weights per cup vary between sources? Scooping packs flour down. Spooned and levelled flour is about 120 g per cup; scooped from the bag it can reach 150 g. Weighing removes the guesswork.

Is a Canadian cup different? Canada is officially metric, but most Canadian recipes use the US cup of 236.6 ml, which is what this tool uses. Old imperial cups (284 ml) appear only in pre-metric cookbooks.
