Worked example
From Friday, February 23, 2024 to Friday, March 1, 2024:
- Calendar days in the range: Feb 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, and Mar 1 = 8 days (2024 is a leap year, so Feb 29 is in there)
- Weekend days: Sat Feb 24 and Sun Feb 25 = 2 days
- Working days: Fri 23, Mon 26, Tue 27, Wed 28, Thu 29 (the leap day), and Fri Mar 1 = 6 working days
How this calculator works
Each day in the range is checked against the calendar and counted as a working day if it falls Monday through Friday. The count includes both endpoints, so a single Monday counts as 1 working day. Canadian statutory holidays are not excluded in this version: if a holiday such as Canada Day or Boxing Day falls inside your range on a weekday, subtract it by hand for an exact business count.
Common questions
Why does my count differ from my employer's or a courier's?
Most differences come from two choices: whether the start and end dates are both counted (this calculator counts both), and statutory holidays (this calculator does not subtract them). A courier quoting "5 business days" usually starts counting the day after pickup and skips holidays, so its count will run later than this one.
Which holidays should I subtract in Canada?
It depends on the province and the industry. Federal holidays include New Year's Day, Good Friday, Canada Day, Labour Day, and Christmas Day, among others, and each province adds its own (for example, Family Day in Ontario in February). Check the official holiday list for your province and subtract any that fall on weekdays inside your range.
