Coffee Ratio Calculator
Pick a strength ratio, then enter the coffee or the water you have. The other amount is calculated for you.
Worked example
At a 1:16 ratio, 30 g of coffee needs 30 x 16 = 480 ml of water. Thirty grams is roughly 4.3 tablespoons of ground coffee, using the rough guide of 1 tbsp at about 7 g.
Formula
Water (ml) = coffee (g) x ratio. Coffee (g) = water (ml) / ratio. Water weighs 1 g per ml, so the ratio works the same by weight. Tablespoons = coffee grams / 7, a rough estimate only; a scale is far more accurate.
FAQs
Which ratio should I start with? 1:16 suits most drip and pour-over brewing. Go to 1:15 for a stronger cup or 1:17 to 1:18 for a lighter one, and adjust grind before changing the ratio drastically.
Does this work for espresso or French press? Espresso uses much tighter ratios (about 1:2) and French press often 1:12 to 1:14. This calculator covers the common filter range of 1:15 to 1:18.
