Torque Converter
Convert newton metres, pound-feet, pound-inches and kilogram metres. Useful when a manual lists one unit and your torque wrench reads another.
Common torque conversions
| Conversion | Result |
|---|---|
| 1 lb-ft | 1.3558 Nm |
| 1 Nm | 0.7376 lb-ft |
| 1 lb-ft | 12 lb-in |
| 1 lb-in | 0.1130 Nm |
| 1 kg-m | 9.8067 Nm |

Worked example
Many Canadian cars specify wheel lug nut torque around 100 lb-ft: 100 x 1.3558 = 135.58 Nm. Always confirm the spec in your owner manual. Enter 100, choose Pound-feet, then choose Newton metres to see 135.5818 Nm.
Frequently asked questions
Is lb-ft the same as ft-lb?
For torque, yes, the two terms are used interchangeably in manuals and on wrenches, even though ft-lb is technically a unit of energy. This converter treats them as the same torque unit.
Why do small fasteners use lb-in instead of lb-ft?
Small bolts torque to values under 10 lb-ft, which are easier to read as 120 lb-in. One lb-ft equals exactly 12 lb-in, so divide a lb-in spec by 12 to set a lb-ft wrench.
