Storage Unit Size Calculator
Enter your goods volume, or pick the size of the home the goods come from.
Worked example
A typical 2 bedroom home holds about 16 m3 of storable goods. A 10x10 ft unit offers about 16.7 m3 of usable stacked volume, so a 10x10 is the recommended size, with a 10x15 suggested if you want a walking aisle.
Formula and unit guide
Usable volume = floor area in m2 x 2.4 m ceiling height x 75 percent, the last factor allowing for access gaps and imperfect stacking.
| Unit (ft) | Usable volume | Typically fits |
|---|---|---|
| 5x5 | about 4.2 m3 | Closet contents, boxes, a bike, seasonal decor |
| 5x10 | about 8.4 m3 | Studio apartment furniture |
| 10x10 | about 16.7 m3 | 2 bedroom home, or a car with items stacked around it |
| 10x15 | about 25.1 m3 | 3 bedroom home |
| 10x20 | about 33.4 m3 | 4 bedroom home, or a vehicle plus furniture |
| 10x30 | about 50.2 m3 | Large home, business inventory, or multiple vehicles |
FAQs
Should I size up for access? If you will visit monthly or need anything from the back, yes. A packed-to-the-door unit saves rent but costs time on every visit; many people take the next size up for an aisle.
Does ceiling height change things? Yes. Units with 2.7 m or 3 m ceilings hold noticeably more than the 2.4 m assumed here if you stack safely with shelving. Ask the facility for the actual height before booking.
