Sod Calculator

Work out how many rolls of sod your lawn needs. A standard Canadian sod roll covers 0.93 m² (the common 2 ft by 5 ft roll), and rolls ship on pallets of about 65.

Length times width fills this in, or type your own area.
5% suits a rectangle; use 10% for curves and odd shapes.

Worked example

A backyard lawn is 10 m by 8 m, with a 5% waste allowance for cuts around the edges:

Most sod farms sell by the roll or by the full pallet. At 91 rolls, expect the farm to quote one full pallet plus 26 loose rolls, or to round you up to a second partial pallet for delivery.

How this calculator works

Rolls = ceil( Area × (1 + Waste%) ÷ 0.93 m² per roll ); Pallets = Rolls ÷ 65

The 0.93 m² roll is the common Canadian size, a roll about 2 ft wide and 5 ft long. Pallet counts vary by farm, roughly 60 to 70 rolls, and 65 is the planning figure used here. Sod is cut fresh and should be laid the day it arrives, so the waste allowance is worth keeping: running short means a second trip to the farm, and cut edges dry out fast.

Common questions

How much extra sod should I order?

About 5% for a plain rectangle and 10% where there are curves, trees, or garden beds to cut around. Sod cannot be returned once cut, so modest over-ordering beats a second delivery.

Does every farm use the same roll size?

Most Ontario and Canadian farms cut the 0.93 m² roll used here, but some cut larger rolls or slabs. Confirm the roll coverage with your farm before ordering, and adjust by typing your area and comparing against their figure.
