LED Savings Calculator

See what switching from incandescent or halogen bulbs to LEDs saves you each year, and how quickly the new bulbs pay for themselves.

60 W incandescent is the classic comparison.
A 9 W LED roughly matches a 60 W incandescent.
Check your bill. Ontario all-in residential rates often land near $0.13 to $0.20.
Price of the LED minus the price of the old bulb it replaces.

Your results

Old bulbs, cost per year$98.55
LEDs, cost per year$14.78
Energy saved per year558.5 kWh
Money saved per year$83.77
Payback time on the bulbs2.9 months

Worked example

Ten 60 W incandescent bulbs replaced by 9 W LEDs, used 3 hours a day at $0.15 per kWh:

How this calculator works

Yearly kWh = Bulbs × Watts × Hours per day × 365 ÷ 1,000

Savings are the difference between the old and new yearly kWh, multiplied by your rate. Payback is the total extra bulb cost divided by the yearly savings.

Common questions

How long do LEDs actually last?

Most LED bulbs are rated for 15,000 to 25,000 hours, versus about 1,000 hours for an incandescent. At 3 hours a day, that is roughly 14 to 23 years, so replacement savings add up on top of the energy savings shown here.

What rate should I use?

Use the all-in rate from your electricity bill (energy plus delivery and fees, divided by kWh used). Time-of-use customers in Ontario can use a blended rate near $0.15 as a starting point.
