EV vs Gas Comparison
A fuel-only comparison: what the same yearly driving costs in a gas vehicle versus an electric one. Purchase price, insurance, and maintenance are deliberately not in this calculator, and the fuel gap is the honest starting point.

Worked example
Driving 20,000 km a year, gas at $1.60 per litre and 8.0 L per 100 km, against an EV at 18 kWh per 100 km and $0.15 per kWh:
- Gas: 20,000 ÷ 100 × 8.0 L = 1,600 L, and 1,600 × $1.60 = $2,560 a year
- EV: 20,000 ÷ 100 × 18 kWh = 3,600 kWh, and 3,600 × $0.15 = $540 a year
- Difference: $2,560 − $540 = $2,020 a year, or $10,100 over 5 years, fuel only
How this calculator works
This comparison covers fuel only, and is labelled that way because it is the comparison most often overstated. It does not include the vehicles' purchase prices, financing, insurance, tires, or maintenance, all of which differ between specific models and can narrow or widen the real-world gap.
Common questions
What if I charge mostly at public fast chargers?
Public DC fast charging often costs the equivalent of $0.40 to $0.60 per kWh once per-minute pricing is converted. Put that figure in the electricity rate field: the EV advantage shrinks a lot, and for some drivers nearly disappears.
How does winter change the comparison?
Both sides get worse in a Canadian winter. Gas consumption typically rises 10 to 20 percent in deep cold, and EV consumption can rise 20 to 40 percent with cabin heating and cold-soaked batteries. Running both seasons through this calculator with adjusted consumption figures gives a fairer yearly picture.
Estimates only. Results cover fuel and energy costs only, as labelled, and are provided for planning purposes. Actual costs vary with prices, temperature, driving patterns, and charging mix.
