Worked example

A 2 x 6 in board, 8 ft long: (2 x 6 x 8) / 12 = 8 board feet per piece. Ten pieces = 80 board feet. At $3.50 per board foot: 80 x $3.50 = $280.00.

How it works

Board feet per piece = thickness (in) x width (in) x length (ft) / 12. Total board feet = per piece x quantity. Cost = total board feet x price per board foot. If the yard quotes length in inches instead of feet, divide the inch length by 12 first.

FAQ

Do I enter nominal or actual dimensions?

Enter the dimensions the lumber is sold by. Hardwood and rough lumber are usually priced on nominal (rough-sawn) size, while a dressed 2 x 6 actually measures 1.5 x 5.5 in. Ask the yard which size they bill on if it matters for your order.

How much extra should I buy?

For furniture and visible work, add 10 to 20% for defects, grain matching and mistakes. Board foot pricing makes it easy: just raise the quantity in the calculator until the total fits your waste target.

Estimates only. This calculator gives planning estimates, not professional advice. Confirm the yard's billing dimensions and current price before ordering.
