Asphalt Calculator
Tonnes of hot mix asphalt for a driveway, pad, or patch, from area and compacted thickness.
Results
Worked example
A 40 m² driveway overlay at 50 mm thick. Volume = 40 × 0.05 = 2.00 m³. Weight = 2.00 × 2.35 = 4.70 tonnes.
How it works
Volume = area × thickness. Weight = volume × compacted density, using the stated standard of 2.35 tonnes per cubic metre for compacted hot mix. A 50 mm compacted lift is a typical driveway overlay thickness; new construction on a granular base often uses a greater total thickness placed in two lifts. Enter the total compacted thickness you plan to place.
FAQ
Why does the plant ask for tonnes instead of volume?
Hot mix is batched and sold by weight, and density varies slightly by mix design. The 2.35 t per m³ figure is a widely used planning standard; your plant can confirm the density of the mix you are ordering.
Should I add the 10 percent allowance?
For hand-placed or irregular areas, yes. Edges, uneven base, and spillage eat material, and running short mid-placement is worse than having a small surplus.
Estimates only. Mississippi Maple provides approximate material estimates for planning. Confirm mix density and quantities with your asphalt plant or paving contractor before ordering.
